WA Mission

Our Mission

The Washington Army National Guard has a unique dual mission that consists of both Federal and State roles.

Washington National Guard SoldierFor state missions, the governor, through the state Adjutant General, commands Guard forces. The governor can call the National Guard into action during local or statewide emergencies.  During local emergencies and statewide emergencies, Guard units assist residents endangered by storms, floods, fires and other disasters.

While the Guard originally focused on protecting local communities, it eventually grew into a force that complements the Active Duty Army when help is needed anywhere in the world. The biggest difference is that while Guard units are combat-trained and can be deployed overseas, they are just as likely to serve in their home communities.

For federal missions, the Washington Army National Guard has a federal obligation to maintain properly trained and equipped units, be available for prompt mobilization for war or national emergency, or as otherwise needed.   Guard units deployed overseas may experience combat.  Others may use expertise gained in civilian careers to build schools and hospitals, train local peacekeepers, or teach local farmers how to use land more efficiently.

Whether the call is coming from the State Governor or directly from the President of the United States, Washington Army National Guard Soldiers are Always Ready and Always There.
